The Statue Road AR project is a Web AR service that offers a new way to appreciate and interact with the cultural heritage of stone artifacts from the Cheongju National Museum in an easy and engaging manner. By integrating meaningful and value-enhancing narratives with the harmoniously displayed stone artifacts in the museum, we created an immersive experience through AR content.
To enable visitors to quickly access the AR content and maximize its educational impact, the service was developed as a mobile web solution instead of an app. Visitors can simply scan a QR code to start their AR journey. Through a brief survey, they are recommended a personalized guardian deity, which accompanies them throughout the exhibition, collecting stamps along the way to earn rewards. This approach encourages active participation in the content. As an added reward, AR cards are provided after the exhibition to extend the experience even after visitors leave the museum.
Through this exhibition, visitors can simultaneously appreciate the stone artifacts in their natural, offline setting and enjoy an enriched experience via AR content. The AR interaction deepens their focus, allowing them to observe the artifacts in greater detail during the experience.
Providing a New Way to Experience the Stone Artifacts of the Cheongju National Museum through AR Content.
Statue Road AR* is an AR content platform designed to make the viewing of approximately 200 stone artifacts displayed in the outdoor park of the *Cheongju National Museum* more engaging. The AR experience is built around a narrative where visitors help a guardian deity (Stone Human Statue) recover its lost memories. To ensure quick and easy access, the service was developed as a Mobile Web-based solution, enabling visitors to start their AR journey simply by scanning a QR code. The experience was designed without fixed paths, offering diverse and flexible ways to explore. We also created interactive and participatory AR content to captivate visitors' interest. The program encourages participation through reward systems and promotes both online and offline sharing and engagement via social media platforms, driving further outreach and connection.
We guided visitors into the content through a central storyline,
enhancing engagement with captivating AR content and collaborations with illustrators. Additionally, a reward system was designed to create a seamless and connected user experience. To soften the rigid and intimidating image of traditional stone statues,
we collaborated with an illustrator to establish a visual direction
that appeals to all age groups.
We designed the exhibition to allow visitors to explore diverse content without being restricted to a set path. QR codes were placed on signboards next to the stone artifacts to spark curiosity and guide visitors to access the content from various locations across the museum grounds. A simple UX was developed to ensure usability across all age groups, enabling visitors to easily understand and complete the entire journey at any stage of their experience.
The exhibition was designed to help visitors naturally engage with and appreciate the deeper stories behind the stone artifacts. Statue Road is an experiential exhibition where visitors explore the museum through a central narrative of restoring the lost names of guardian deities (stone statues). A brief survey provides visitors with a personalized guardian deity (stone statue character), which increases engagement and fosters a sense of connection. The experience is structured to allow visitors to explore personalized content and journey through the entire exhibition together. Visitors can encounter the stone statues through AR in various spaces, explore nature, and enjoy a healing experience.
We introduced VPS (Visual Positioning System) technology, which allows for precise mapping between the user and the stone statue, enabling an accurate alignment between the real world and graphics.
For optimized 3D content in the Web AR environment, we developed a masking solution for each stone statue and established an asset creation and rendering environment that works smoothly even on low-spec devices. Additionally, physical AR cards were provided as rewards, offering continued engagement both online and offline, extending the user journey.
An admin dashboard was created to monitor content consumption statistics and manage guestbook content. This setup allows for comprehensive monitoring of user statistics, ensuring smooth operations.
